The gamers among you will have no doubt heard about EA and DICE’s
upcoming Battlefield 4 which will be built on the improved Frostbite 3
engine, an updated version of the Frostbite 2 engine that powered the
popular Battlefield 3 title. But you may not have known that DICE has
also been working on developing a version of its engine for mobile
platforms, which is called Frostbite Go.
According to the statement on the official Frostbite webpage, the Frostbite Go engine will bring features from the main engine to “all major mobile platforms”, so we assume that includes Android and Apple without any doubt.
This confirms the shift in attention we’re seeing towards mobile platforms for gaming; it wasn’t too long ago that Epic’s Unreal Engine was also confirmed to be heading to mobile platforms as well, and graphics API’s like DirectX11 and OpenGL are also becoming increasingly important for gaming on mobile devices.
